 Dr. Beatriz Arlanzón-Colindres

Why I work at UCR: UCR improves semester after semester. Not only becomes our institution more mature; there is always something going on as well. The meetings and the interaction are continuous at every level: students with students, instructors with instructors, and above all, students with instructors. This nourishes our creativity.  The shorter distance between two points is a straight line but this route may not be the most profitable or interesting one. We explore other routes, other possibilities. Sometimes we are successful and when we are not, the failure is never complete. It will leave a mark in our minds that will give birth to another idea, another project, another discovery trip. We are willing to take new challenges and we feel ready for them.

What’s interesting about my discipline: I love teaching Spanish, doing research on Spanish language and creating material for my courses but above all I like when my students ask me difficult questions. They force me to look that information up, to analyse it and to reflect on it. I also have to consider the best way to transmit it to my pupils. They put their critical thinking into practice, so do I. Besides I learn new interesting things. Sometimes I wonder if I am an experienced student who teaches younger, less experienced students. Internet and the new mobile devices offer new approaches to language teaching and learning and we are still discovering their potential. I am sure the best is yet to come.
