 Maaike Roozenburg

After graduating from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in 2004 as a product designer Maaike Roozenburg (Delft, 1979) founded Studio Maaike Roozenburg in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Within this design studio she nitiates and realizes projects on the intersection of design, heritage and digital technologies. Setting out to research the relevance of these objects for our present day society.

In these projects ‘design research’ or ‘artistic research’ plays a fundamental role. Research which is focused on deducting and construing meaning and is complementary to scientific research in which obtaining knowledge is the primary target. This research can be a historical investigation into the use, form or origin of objects and utensils. Or it can be hands-on experimentation, investigating in techniques, production methods and material qualities of an object.  To conduct the research Roozenburg cooperates with different disciplines and experts such as archaeologists, craftsmen, historians, technical engineers, programmers or philosophers and works together with institutions as museums, archives, heritage- and archaeological departments and/or universities.

Maaike Roozenburg aims to develop new ways to combine ‘traditional’ or historical technologies with recently developed (prototyping) techniques. Bringing together tradition and high tech, the ‘real’ and the ‘virtual’, historical utensils and modern design. Merging the past, the present and the future, enriching each other in meaningful projects and products.

She is also head of the Master Industrial Design at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague and a visiting tutor at Delft University of Technology.
