 Prof. Dr. Bert van Duijn

Bert van Duijn is a physiologist and biophysicist, born in Noordwijk aan Zee in the Netherlands. He completed his high school at the Leeuwenhorst College. He studied biology/biophysics at Leiden University (cum laude). In 1990 he obtained his Ph.D. from Leiden University (Department of Cell Biology and Department of Physiology) with a study on the role of membrane potential and ions in the chemotactic response of cellular slime molds. Part of the study was done at the Department of Botany of Kyoto University, Japan. After obtaining his Ph.D. he worked as a Post-doc in the Institute of Molecular Plant Science in Leiden on the role of ion fluxes in the auxin signal transduction. In 1994 he started to work at the Amsterdam University Medical Centre (AMC) on the working mechanism of anesthetics in cooperation between the Department of Physiology and Anesthesiology. By the end of 1996 he returned to Leiden to be part of the management of the Center for Phytotechnology (a cooperation between TNO and Leiden University) and the TNO Department of Applied Plant Sciences. Here, the focus is on Plant Signal Transduction, Seed and Plant Physiology and Sensor development. Since 2006 the TNO group has been reformed into the Research company Fytagoras BV. In 2008 he became professor at Leiden University in the field of Plant Electrophysiology. Since 2006 he has been involved in teaching at University College Roosevelt.
