 Dr. Moritz Baumgärtel


Dr. Moritz Baumgärtel is Assistant Professor at UCR and at the Faculty of Law, Economics and Governance of Utrecht University. He holds a Ph.D. in Law from the Université Libre de Bruxelles, an M.Phil. in International Relations from the University of Cambridge and an LL.M. in Public International Law (cum laude) from Utrecht University. He is also an alumnus of UCR where he graduated in 2010 with a B.A. in Social Sciences (summa cum laude). In recent years, Baumgärtel has been a lecturer at Tilburg Law School and has held visiting positions at the law schools of the University of Michigan, Duke University, and the University of Copenhagen.

Baumgärtel’s research concerns the human rights of vulnerable migrants such as refugees, asylum seekers and undocumented migrants. As a senior researcher of the NWO research project ‘Cities of Refuge’, he is currently focusing on the international legal obligations and policy initiatives of cities and local governments in the migration domain. Baumgärtel also has an interest in the proliferation of international courts and regimes which extends to the areas of transitional justice (especially in the Balkans). He has published articles on the theorization of order and hierarchy in a globalized international system.
