 Outdoor Classroom

Since September 2017, you can find UCR’s brand new outdoor classroom on the Helm Square. The Outdoor Classroom was designed by Sophie Krier, who leads the Art & Design Practice track at UCR and social designer Henriëtte Waal. Both faculty, students, inhabitants and passers-by are welcome to use it spontaneously for a class, talk or any other form of gathering or exchange. As a matter of fact, the Outdoor Classroom turns out to be especially popular as a public bench amongst tourists looking for a place to rest!

Following its opening, the Outdoor Classroom has already hosted many spontaneous, interdisciplinary teaching & learning events: the Cities of Refuge opening word by Dutch  Minister of Foreign Affairs Bert Koenders was held here; on a windy Sunday afternoon over thirty enthusiasts followed a drawing class with artist Sylvia Radius and cultural historian Jeanine Dekker; and one grey morning UCR instructor Helle Hochscheid and her students held a 30 minute pop-up archeology museum try-out as part of the Global Artefact course.

Anyone can use the Outdoor Classroon, but beyond spontaneous use of a few minutes to half an hour, we do ask you to book in advance, by getting in touch with Upon request, additional facilities can be arranged. A cleaning bucket is also present at the Reception.
