CD Release Call for Freedom!

In the past months, the Roosevelt College Choir has worked hard to record its first CD, entitled Call for Freedom. We are very proud of the result and the CD has been recently released with a spectacular concert in the Zeeuwse Concertzaal. 

The so-called spirituals are in the center of attention. These folk songs originated among enslaved Africans between the seventeenth and the nineteenth century. The slaves were forced to work for their white masters on plantations in the south of the US.

The theme of freedom is closely linked with University College Roosevelt. In the first place president Roosevelt, whose distant ancestors originate from Zeeland, devised the Four Freedoms. In the second place, Middelburg played a pivotal role in the slave trade. From this city, numerous slave vessels were built and departed to the African coast.

Our choir members are all related to University College Roosevelt. The vast majority are students, but UCR faculty members are also a constant in our membership file.
